NUMMI first begin producing
a Toyota 4x2 compact pickup in August 1991. That year, 2,535 trucks
were built. Known as the Hilux, it was the first Toyota compact pickup
truck ever built in the United States. In December of that year, NUMMI
dedicated an all new paint facility and assembly line for the truck.
In 1992, NUMMI began producing a 4x4 compact truck, followed by an
extended cab version in 1993. This expansion brought the total truck
capacity to 150,000 units a year. In 1995, the Hilux was re-named
the Toyota
Tacoma, which is still in production today. |
