Production Control is responsible
for planning and scheduling Car and Truck production, ordering and
managing the transportation and packaging of parts, stocking raw material
and maintaining and monitoring inventory control.
Parts Management

One of the most critical ways Production Control supports vehicle
production is maintaining and controlling inventory of parts. The
Parts Management teams, PM1 and PM2, ensure correct part quantities
are ordered and received for production. If not controlled, some part
of the production system could be shut down due to a parts shortage.
Once parts are ordered, PM1 and PM2 coordinate transportation from
suppliers to NUMMI. Parts are shipped by rail, truck or sea cargo,
depending upon the supplier’s location. Normal delivery time of parts
coming from the Midwest, for example, is about five days. Dana Corporation
in Stockton, California, which builds truck frames for NUMMI, delivers
parts as often as every hour.
PC’s Plant Operations unit, located on the plant floor, is responsible
for receiving parts from North American and overseas suppliers. Each
day team members unload trailers containing a variety of parts at
the storage docks. The parts are temporarily placed in NUMMI’s Stores
until they are needed on the line.
The Stores also ship service parts to General Motors’ and Toyota’s
North American distribution centers.
Planning and Scheduling

The Vehicle Scheduling group tracks orders from our parent companies
and develops production plans based on orders. The plans are then
used to schedule all manufacturing work done in the plant.
Once Vehicle Scheduling approves orders, the Control Room schedules
vehicles to be built. The Control Room can track manufacturing status
at any point in time in the build process. Control Room team members
work closely with manufacturing to ensure production goals are met.
Program Management

The Program Management section of Production Control houses the Program
Management and Planning (PMP) team, which plans years ahead for a
new model launch. PMP team members travel extensively to ensure vendors
will be able to supply NUMMI with the right quantity and quality of
parts on deadline.
General Stores

Another section within the Production Control department is General
Stores. The Indirect Materials team within General Stores maintains
inventory of smaller items such as hand tools, safety glasses, gloves
and nearly everything else that is not installed into the vehicle.
The Receiving building at the west end of the plant is responsible
for receiving and delivering of all raw materials, such as steel coils,
paint and sealer.
The Fleet Maintenance portion of General Stores maintains and services
NUMMI’s fleet of forklifts and delivery vehicles in use in the plant.
